We’ve all heard the story about the tortoise and the hare. Slow and steady wins the race. That’s a great message but I think there’s another one there: Do the simple things.
The hare would have won if he simply had run. No matter how slowly and steadily the tortoise ran, there’s no way he would have won if the hare just had kept running.
The path to success is often simple, but simple doesn’t equal easy. I think there are a few reasons why we end up not doing the simple things that ultimately lead to success.
Number one, sometimes we understand what to do but we don’t do it because it’s hard. Eating right and exercising is simple in concept but harder to do in practice. Again, simple doesn’t mean easy.
Number two, we avoid doing the simple things by searching out the more complex things. Instead of just getting our work done, we search for dozens of productivity apps and read article after article about how to be more productive. It’s easy to procrastinate by overcomplicating things.
The third reason we don’t do the simple things is because we lose sight of the real goal. This is what happened to the hare. He lost sight of his goal and got distracted by trying to look good instead of actually trying to win the race.
Sometimes the best way to win the race is to simply run.
