90 With Andrew, Episode 4: Overnight Success

There are very rarely overnight successes. Some successes might look like they happened overnight but they are usually the culmination of consistent effort. Even for people like Nathan Apodaca, or better known as doggface208 on TikTok. You know, the guy riding the longboard, drinking Ocean Spray, and singing along to Fleetwood Mac. Go check out his account. If you scroll down, past his viral video, you’ll find hundreds of more videos. His “overnight success” didn’t happen on the first try. He created tons of videos and one finally went viral.

Overnight successes, as with all successes, happen because of a few factors.

First, consistent effort. How was Rome built? Not in a day, right? It was built the same way that anything is built. Brick by brick, piece by piece, day by day. You need sustained effort over time, sporadic spikes don’t work.

Second, lots of failures and iteration. Failing alone doesn’t get you anywhere. But, if you learn from your failures and iterate, you’ll go places.

Third, a little luck. It just so happened that that video went viral. Did Nathan do anything special or different than he had in his other videos? No, not really. But he got lucky and that video resonated with people.

I think that consistent effort and iteration compound to increase the probability of getting lucky or creating your own luck. That’s when the magic happens and success looks like it was overnight. Thanks for watching!
