Episode 11: My Advice for College Students

Today I had the opportunity to talk to the Huntsman Marketing Association at Utah State University. I was a part of HMA while at Utah State and it was a formative experience for me. This is the advice I shared with them.

Follow your curiosity. I was interested in digital marketing while in school, so I explored it. I created a website, got a few internships where I could try my hand at it, and that experience paid off for me. I didn’t know where it would lead at the time, but looking back it all helped me get to where I am at CloudApp.

Don’t wait to be picked. You can’t just sit there raising your hand, you need to take initiative and be proactive. Be active and seek out your own opportunities.

Think long term. Coming out of college, I had already accepted a job opportunity before CloudApp came along. But the opportunity didn’t feel right and wasn’t really in line with where I wanted to go long term. I chose the riskier option, an internship, because I thought it would lead where I wanted to go long term.

Say yes. A lot of the opportunities I have had in my short career have come because I said yes. Yes to things that were outside of my comfort zone. Things that forced me to grow and contribute in new ways. Saying yes, early in your career, can open doors for you.

know that my path is unique, but those principles are what I can attribute a lot of my progression to. Thanks for watching!
