My last year of college was pretty stressful. Everyone around me was getting great job opportunities, and I was worried that I’d never get a good job, or worse, I was worried that I’d get a job that I would hate. It was easy to compare myself to others and wonder if I was good enough. I got passed up by a big company that came recruiting and felt like my life was over. I didn’t feel like I was on “the right path”.
Things have turned out ok and looking back at that stressful time, I can see a valuable lesson. No one’s path is the same and there’s no single path that leads to success and happiness.
It can be tempting to compare ourselves to other people, especially people who we admire. But comparing doesn’t help anything. There’s no use to it. Every one of ous is on our own, unique journey through.
Sure, we shouldn’t completely ignore everyone else, we can definitely learn from other people and But we need to constantly remind ourselves, at least I do, that we are on our own path, and that path isn’t like anyone elses.
I recently read that if you can replicate the steps and get the same result it’s science but if you can do the same things and not get the same outcome, it’s art. Forging our own paths is an art. There is no “right path”. There is only “your path”.
