Episode 13: Different Approaches

The winners of golf’s last two majors could not be more different. Dustin Johnson, who just won the Masters, and Bryson DeChambeau, who won the U.S. Open; each has a completely different approach to the game.

DeChambeau is golf’s mad scientist. He’s got a degree in physics and he puts it to use. He’s always trying a new strategy. Whether it’s using single-length irons or gaining 30 lbs in the offseason to hit the ball further or using a 48-inch driver, he’s always analyzing and thinking about new ways to play the game.

Dustin Johnson, on the other hand, is different. Rory McIlroy said his approach is “See ball, hit ball. See put, hole put. On to the next”. DJ himself even once said, “There are only two things that can happen, a good shot or a bad shot. I don’t see why you’d spend too much time worrying about it over the ball”. Sure he practices and thinks through his shots like anyone else on tour, but not like Bryson does.

What I find interesting is that despite having such different mindsets and approaches to the game, they both have won big tournaments and are on track to have extremely successful careers.

It just goes to show that there’s more than one way to do things. I think the best way is the way that works for you. Figuring out what way that is is hard, it may take a lot of experimentation, but once you do figure it out, it’s ok to stick with it, and don’t worry if someone else is doing things totally differently.
