Episode 21: Making It Up as We Go

Updated: Dec 2, 2020

No one really has it all figured out, do they? Everyone is just kinda making it up as they go. That’s certainly true, I think, but there’s also a cycle that helps us to move forward and not become paralyzed by not really knowing what we are doing.

Everything starts with courage. It doesn’t take much to have courage. You don’t have to have experience, knowledge, or anything else. Courage can stand alone, so that’s where you start when you have nothing else to lean on.

Courage has to be directed, directed into action. Acting is where the magic always happens. Acting with courage is when you do the work and make it up as you go. When you act, something has to happen. You either succeed or you fail. Either way, there’s something to learn.

That’s the next step, learning from your actions. We call that experience, right? Because really, experience is just a bunch of learning that we can lean on. With that, your courage is strengthened and even though you still don’t know what you’re doing, you can rely on your past experience to know that it will all work out, that you’ll figure it out, and that you’ll be ok. Then, the cycle repeats itself.

Have courage, take action, gain experience, repeat. That’s the recipe. It’s not easy, but it is simple. The spark that sets it all off: just a little bit of courage. So let’s take courage, act, and let the magic happen.
